STUDIO TOUR TODAY

Today a group of painters are writing about our studios. There's so much variety in artists' working spaces - some have spacious studios and others work on their kitchen table. Now you can tour them online.

My studio is very bare bones....a small 10x10 room facing east.

The first thing you will notice when you enter, is not art related at all, but rather, a giant elephant in the room....my workout machine.

A small room, but I have space for my easel, my television, art books, CD player, and most importantly, my computer.  I almost always paint off my monitor.

I also have a small drafting table which holds my palette when I paint and also comes in handy when I am working on my mixed media pieces.  Somedays, I spend lots of time sitting there and staring out the window.

I couldn't have a studio without my closet.  I store all my supplies there, from frames to inventory.  Since I have started doing a lot of mixed media, my supply shelves are getting very crowded with mediums, gels, papers and found objects.  Hmmmm, I think a re-organization is in order.

I sell most of my works on line, so much of it is in the small "daily painting" category.  It does make it easier to store around 150 paintings!

What I refer to as my "shipping department" is below these shelves.  It consists of a roll of bubble wrap,  odd and ends of foam core, a child's wagon full of styrofoam peanuts and misc pieces of shipping materials I re-cycle from shipments I receive.

Thanks so much for touring my studio today.  To continue on with this artist's studio tour, just click on one of the links below.

Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Abstract Landscape, Abstract Sunset, "Mountain Sunset" 4x6" SOLD

I am just home from a trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains, which inspired my painting for today.

SOLD

My goal was to reproduce the vibrant colors of the sunset with just a suggestion of mountain ridges.

I enjoy the thick application of paint and rough, unfinished texture in this piece.  It seems the more I paint, the more I move towards the abstract form.

This abstract landscape painting is a 4x6" on 1.5" gallery wrap canvas.  If you enjoy it, please pin it.

Landscape Tree Painting "Reach for the Sun" 6x8" Oil SOLD

This massive oak tree lives on a neighboring farm in North Carolina.  It is beautiful any time of the day, but seemed even more so with the sun setting behind it.

SOLD

I have been on a tree painting frenzy this past few days, fueled and influenced by a small painting I purchased from Robert Kimball.  If you are not familiar with his work, I hope you will check out his blog.  His color choices are excellent.

I have wanted to do some tree studies for quite some time, but never seemed to get around to it.  This week I did several and will be posting them soon.

Daily Painting, Original Seascape, "Off Shore Storm" by Carol Schiff 6x8" Oil, SOLD

The other day my husband and I went for a walk on the beach.  Although it was sunny when we left home, ten minutes later black clouds were rolling in over the waves.

SOLD

The clouds had not yet completely obscured the horizon leaving a strip of aqua sunlight on the sea.

When I came home, I went straight to the easel, painting this from memory.

Small Seascape, "Green Wave" 6x8" Oil SOLD

My husband retired recently, and we find ourselves walking on the beach quite regularly these days.  I always take my camera because you never know when that perfect scene will be spread out at your feet.  On those days I go without it, I always see multiple "perfect scenes".

SOLD
I have to remind myself, that seeing the perfect scene, and getting an image of it are two different things.  Usually, when I look in my viewfinder, the sun is in my eyes, or some such distraction, and I just click away in frustration, unable to see what I am pointing at.

I enjoy the trip again when I return home and download the images.  Usually I find at least a few that have possibilities.

I am sure by now all you plein air painters are horrified, but I have always been a studio painter and always will be.  I did TRY to do plein air, but  find it is a whole different ballgame.  I have great respect for anyone who can climb a mountain with a 36x48 canvas strapped on his back.......just cannot see me doing it!

Enjoy the day.........

Original Pastel, "I Have a Dream"

I was notified a few days ago that my painting "I Have A Dream" has been awarded "Best of Show" in the May challenge at CFAI.com.

Purchase here

I'm thrilled to have this honor.

Several years ago, before cell phones etc, I was attending an Easter egg hunt when these two darling babies  suddenly embraced.  I was lucky enough to have a camera pointed in their direction at the right time.  When I saw the image, all I could think about was Martin Luther King's famous speech.
