THE BLUE PALMETTO

A few weeks ago I posted a painting I did of palmettos with strong sunlight on them. I was trying to do plein air that day, but was soon reduced to taking photos. I was lucky enough to get a couple usable photos and I got excited as soon as I saw this one. When the camera flashed I could see the strong blues on the palmetto. This is a 16x20 oil on stretched canvas. I painted it with an idea in the back of my head to have three palmetto paintings to hang as a group. So far I have one in landscape form and one in portrait and I am still musing over the third.

Hi Carol, thx for your comments on my portrait for Karin's year end challenge. This is a fun way to "meet" like minded folks! Your palmettos are a far cry from the current foot of snow outside my door, thanks for the warm break! Happy new year to you. robin

This is beautiful. I love the way you presented the subject matter from the point of view to the strong lighting. The grouping sounds like it would have nice impact. Would love to see what they look like as a group when you complete them!

This looks great - I love the way you can tease colours out of palm fronds.

Carol, Great work, and thanks for visiting my blog today. Your palmetto is wonderful. We used to live in Gainesville when I was in grad school for horticulture, and I fell in love with the palmettos. I left a response to your question about scouting out-of-town galleries on my blog: http://matthewweld.blogspot.com/2008/08/in-newspaper.html

Hi Carol! I agree, a grouping of this type of painting would be very powerful! It has an almost abstracted quality that I love. And the colors are very striking.
