BIRD'S EYE VIEW, 10x8, Palette Knife, oil SOLD

SOLD

Nothin' could be finer
Than to be in Carolina
In the Morning

Gus Kahn and Walter Donaldson

I have to agree with Gus (he wrote the words).  Especially when you are gazing off the top of one of the highest mountains in the Blue Ridges.

I rugged scene calls for rugged strokes and a large palette knife!

But wait!!!  That doesn't mean I don't appreciate my home state too!

A PERFECT SUMMER DAY ON THE PORCH, 6X8, Oil

I would like to spend my lazy afternoons here.

Sitting in a soft chair, a great book in one hand.....

and a cool drink in the other.  Oh, and a foot stool too, so I could drift off and take a short nap if the mood would strike....and you know it would!

UP CHILDERS' BARN ROAD, 5X7", SOLD

Living on the side of a mountain is not easy...all those hills to climb, clinging on the edge of the bluff....

The natives in North Carolina, live mostly in the valleys and the foothills, the summer folk live on top of the mountains.

I live in the valley.  There is an old saying "It's better to have a friend with a boat, than to have a boat" which I have changed to "It's better to have a friend with a mountain view, than to haul everything you own up the side of a mountain!"

TRIO DE POIRES SUR LA PLAQUE, 6X8, Oil, Canvas Board, SOLD

I could have called this "Three Pears on a Plate"

That would have been an accurate description of this painting.

But somehow it sounds so much more elegant in French!  Why is that?
Enjoy!

THE TOP OF THE WORLD, 6x8, OIL on Canvas Board

Waterrock Knob is a must-stop along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Located at Milepost 451.2 (just 18 miles from the end of the Parkway), it features the last hiking trail along the Parkway as you travel toward the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This peak (6,292 feet) is the 16th highest mountain in the Eastern United States - and the the 15th highest of the 40 mountains in North Carolina over 6,000 feet. There are fantastic views both east and west from the parking area, home to a Visitors Center and restrooms. It's one of the best places in the North Carolina mountains to watch a sunrise or sunset.

If you have never climbed a mountain, this is not the one to start on!

Although the trail is not long, only 1.4 miles, it is very steep and involved climbing over giant boulders, some of which were spotted with blood (yikes!).

On the other hand, my 9 year old grandson sprinted up the trail like a deer.

Johnny's Barn, 6x8", original oil, canvas board SOLD

"I was so naive as a kid I used to sneak behind the barn and do nothing."
Johnny Carson (October 23, 1925 - January 23, 2005)

This is not really "Johnny's Barn", but I kind of liked the idea of him sitting back there, trying to think up something unacceptable to do.

This is the final post for "Barn Week" at the studio.  I still have more barn paintings rattling around but I will save them for another time.  Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping bye.

IF WALLS COULD TALK, 6X8, Original Oil, Canvas Board

Sometimes I wonder about the stories connected to these old barns.  If you remember my last post, I have been vacationing in North Carolina for a few weeks and returned with plenty of images.  So I proclaim this to be "Barn Week" at the studio.

On this one I wanted to work with a purple/green color combination and also to try to get some nice loose strokes in the scene.

I'll be listing this in the Daily Paintwork's auction today.

Thanks for stopping by.

THE OLD BARN SLEEPS, IGNORED, 5X7, SOLD Original Oil, Canvas Board

The old barn sleeps, ignored, beside the highway
Where tourists thunder by, vacation bound
And in her dreams, she sees her past unfolded
And ghosts of folk who once walked here-around

P. Smith
