 My goal here was to suggest the beauty and colors of the marsh in late summer.  I wanted to use plenty of texture and thick paint to do so.

I really love the gallery wrap canvases from "The Edge".  I like the chunky shape of this small 8x8" with the 1.5" depth that gives this small painting more presence.

Abstract Triptych, "Confetti" 5x15" Oil SOLD

Today, I am posting something new to me.....my first abstract triptych!  I really enjoyed working on this and hope to do more in the future.

I have not quite figured out how to photograph these yet...something I need to work on!

It is on three 5x5" gallery wrap canvases with the sides painted black.  Each piece is signed on the side.

It works in both a vertical or horizontal composition.

CFAI Challenge Winner for February "Groovin" SOLD

Several months ago I decided to join Contemporary Fine Art International ,"CFAI", website.  It's a great site featuring many wonderful artists.  In addition to their own gallery, members have the opportunity to post on the CFAI blogs, advertise in their fabulous e-magazine, and enter their monthly challenges.

I am thrilled that my painting "Grovin'"  won "Best of Show" in the February, 2013 challenge.  The theme was romance.  They also offer a juried show several times a year.  If you are an artist, consider entering, you do not have to be a member to enter the challenges.

Pelican Painting, "Big Bird", 6x8 oil SOLD

Living in Florida, I am expected to have a selection of pelican paintings at all times. This guy is not actually a Florida pelican, but lives in California.  He looks just like our guys though.  One of my Etsy buddies, Retagene, sent me her image and gave me permission to use it.

How do I know it's a guy?  It's that yellow on his head that gives him away.  When you see a pelican with a yellow head, you know he is looking for a girl friend.   Hmmmm, it would be nice if humans had such an obvious sign too.....might have helped me out back in the day!

"Ridge Line" 6x12" Palette Knife Painting SOLD

It is hard to beat the beauty of the mountains, especially when the sun is setting.

We were enjoying dinner at a friend's house when the sun put on this wonderful display.  The watercolor sky was impossible to ignore and the trees on the ridge appeared on fire as the sun dropped behind the mountain.

Sunsets are truly one of life's jewels.  Enjoy!

Daily Painting, "Apple on the Tree" 6x8", Oil Original, SOLD

My favorite place to be in the fall is North Carolina.  A few weeks ago we were visiting our favorite orchard there and found the trees full of gorgeous red apples.

The orchard was over run with customers buying fresh apples, cider, jams and jellies, and my favorite..............fresh baked goods!  You have not lived until you have bitten into one of their fresh apple cider donuts or apple fritters or pies.  I was lucky to get out of there with only one sack of donuts in my arms.

As a kid in Ohio, fall brings memories of fallen leaves and hay rides.  After the hay rides we always had hot donuts and apple cider, so I love repeating this tasty treat every fall.

Even here in Florida, there is a tiny taste of fall in the air.A few days ago my friends and I met for lunch and SAT OUTSIDE instead of seeking out air conditioning.  Actually, I always think the October and November are the best kept secret in Florida.  Gorgeous weather and lots of outside activity.

At the time, the barns peppered the countryside, but these days they are few and far between.  If you are lucky enough to spot one, it is likely in disrepair and showing it's age.  This one is located in Bryson City, North Carolina in the Smoky Mountains.


Blogger has been misbehaving for me lately.  When I try to post more than one image, it insists on posting the second image at the top of the post.  Is anyone else having this problem?  I will try to out think them on my next post and see if I can get the second image in.

There is also a problem with subscription services.  At the moment, the feed is not working properly.  I have no idea whether or not subscribers are receiving the daily posts.  Hopefully, this will soon be solved too.

Daily Painting, Pelican, Florida "Hunker Down" 6x8", SOLD

The number one rule in Florida, during hurricane season, is learn to "hunker down".

It simply means,do what you can and then wait it out.  Prepare for the storm, bring in supplies, get lots of books to read, stay dry, and wait!

This pelican had a "hunker down" attitude about him, with no hurricane in sight.  Actually, I think he was sleeping or at least, resting, but whenever I see one in this position, I think "hunker down".

I hope you have a chance to "hunker down" today.  It is not always a bad thing.......it's sometimes pleasant to  have time taken out of your hands and be forced to just rest.

Hopefully, the painting is a little more appealing than the title.

I found these beautiful blooms on my porch and could not ignore them.  The delicate pink tones next to the leathery dusty blue green leaves are very dramatic.  I am not a successful gardener, but these plants thrive on neglect. The only care I give it is to cover it up when our winter cold fronts come through.

As lovely as it looks, beware, it is covered in thorns and spikes and will bite you without warning.  Hmmmmm, maybe that is why I tend to stay away from it!

Landscape, "Barn on Thomas Valley Road" 6x8" SOLD

When we are in the mountains of North Carolina, we pass this barn on our way to town.  It sits between the mountains on the shores of the Tuckaseegee River, on a beautiful little winding road.

I love the rural life style.  It reminds me of my childhood in Ohio.  I never lived on a farm, but my cousins did and I would visit often.  In these fast paced days of rushing from one spot to another, those lazy, hazy days of the past seem very attractive.  I am fortunate to get a taste of that life now and then.

Hope you find a peaceful moment or two in your day.

Daily Landscape Painting, "Blue Ridge Switchback" 6x8 SOLD

Today's daily painting is one of my favorites.  We decided to take a drive to Water Rock Knob, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in beautiful North Carolina.

It was a beautiful, clear October day and I tried hard to capture the clear skies and gorgeous fall foliage.

Living in Florida for 40 years, I miss the fall colors and smells I remember from my childhood in Ohio.  It is  the best part of my visits to North Carolina and I try to get there in mid-October every year.

As a child I loved to rake the leaves into a pile and take a running jump right into the middle.  In those days we would rake the yard and then burn the leaves.  There was nothing better than walking to school on a sidewalk covered with leaves, crackling under my feet as I shuffled along.  Evenings conjure up memories of hay rides followed by warm donuts and cider.  That's before the days of Dunkin Donuts, these were home made and covered in sugar and cinnamon.

I am sorry my grandchildren will never have those memories, but I know when they think back on their childhoods they will find something equally as pleasing to remember.

This daily painting contains some of my favorite items from my home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

A vintage FiestaWare pitcher, a lantern given to me my a dear friend, a hydrangea from my garden, and an old  rusty iron star.

To me, it speaks of a slower way of life.  My blood pressure drops and I am happy spending my days reading novels and baking cookies.

When I come home to Florida, I am refreshed and ready for real life again.

Summer is almost over....and what a summer it has been!  I'm afraid I have over scheduled myself, with trips every two to three weeks, family obligations, etc.  I still have two trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains  scheduled, one of which includes the most dreaded words in the English language.....bathroom renovation!

My stash of paintings, ready to post, is no longer a stash....just a few images left to choose from.  So now I am in the studio, trying to paint, paint, paint before it's time to leave again.

One of those images, is this, a commission I did  in January.  The client loved a similar small piece and ordered two 16x20 still life paintings.  She was a joy to work with and did not even want to see an image of the completed works prior to receiving them.  She said it would be "more like Christmas" if she was completely surprised when she pulled them out of the shipping container.

She sent me several images of her home in San Diego, wanting me to get a feel for the space the paintings would reside.  I must have done something really good to be rewarded with the opportunity  to work with such a charming woman.

Oil Fruit Still Life, "Lemon, Granny and Blueberries" , SOLD 8x10"

It's been a while since I have done any still life.  Recently, I painted three that will be reproduced on bags of chocolate and fruit flavored candies.

I have always been drawn to purples, blues and greens, so I wanted to paint this one again.  On the candy bags, there are a few changes, some leaves are added and the blueberries have been replaced with pieces of chocolate.

It was an exciting project to work on, as well as a real learning experience for me.
