Daily Landscape Painting, "Off the Parkway" 16x20

If you follow my blog, you know I spend lots of time in the mountains of North Carolina.  We have a little house just outside Smoky Mountains National Park.  We travel  back and forth between the mountains and the beaches of Florida several times a year.

NFS
This is not a new piece, but I realized that I have not posted it before.  I painted it several years ago and it hangs in our mountain house.  I was a less experienced artist at the time and I took some artistic license to achieve, what I thought, was an interesting composition.

Now, when I look at it, all I can see is the inconsistent light patterns.  I could easily "fix" it, and maybe someday I will.  But for the time being, it will stay the same.

I remember going to a museum to see a exhibit of VanGogh and Monet once.  None of the paintings were ones that I recognized.  They were all earlier works that somehow survived the years.  They were also less than perfect.

How do you treat your earlier works?  Do you ever re-work them?

On another note, yesterday the wonderful artist, Julie Ford Oliver ( who ironically was also blogging about reworking a painting) mentioned that she had taken word verification off her blog to make commenting easier.  I loved that idea and implemented it quickly.  Thanks, Julie!

I of course recognized where it was right away and it's lovely. You are right about Van Gogh and his earlier work - if you haven't studied him, you would not recognize them to be his.

Thanks so much for removing the word verification. Blogger is making it harder and harder to read and if you have comment moderation, you probably don't need both. I use neither and Blogger has gotten very good about putting the spam in a spam folder so it doesn't show up on my blog.

Hi Carol
I'm so busy these days, I don't get around much! This piece caught my eye on my blog list of thumbnails. Honestly, I really like the mix of blues, and the light from the right side cloud and the yellow on the left in the grass bring the light together. If you enjoy it and it has been hanging, why touch it? As you say,our earlier works are different, but thats ok. It is all a process. I think you would regret it if you reworked it. I have ruined several paintings that I thought needed "fixing". I look back at the photo and wonder why I felt the need. I have decided to leave them alone. (Unless they are very recent and just don't work)So, my vote is that its lovely and leave it as is!

It's really pretty - much nicer than MY "less experienced" paintings.

Sort of embarrassing to admit, but I did start oil painting by watching Bob Ross. I love him to pieces, but man talk about inconsistent lighting! That's what happens when you just paint out of your head.

I don't often rework old paintings. One time Laurel Daniel told me "Fix your mistakes on your next painting" and I thought that was brilliant advice.

Thanks for killing word verification. I have to reload those things 4 and 5 times before I get one I can read. If you get choked with spam then you can always reactivate it.

I took word verification off mine too. Got to complicated for folks to post! I like to re-work or sometimes completely re-do paintings. I've got a few I keep in the studio, that are really awful. I thought they were pretty good at the time, so I keep them as a reminder about how we must always grow as an artist.

I have never re-worked any of my work but I think its time..there's one I have been wanting to do but since I work with pastels, I would have to take it out of the glass and hope it doesn't smudge. I guess thinking about it stops me from doing it. LOL This earlier work of yours is outstanding, Carol!

I love this blogpost and love that you kept this painting as is. I have some that I have reworked but most of them I keep to remind me of how much I have learned.

I also love that you removed word verification...thank you, thank you, thank you!
