Original Mixed Media, "Rusted Lace" 10x10"

This piece was a problem!  The problem was not in creating it, but in photographing it.  I have done a small  series of mixed media pieces that feature rusted elements along with an iridescent acrylic paint.  Loved the results and was getting really excited.  Then I tried to photograph it..............and tried....and tried!

I tried for three months!

I finally took it to a professional photographer.....he failed too!  Ha!  He explained to me that the problem is the background paint.  All those little iridescent points pick up the light and cause it to look uneven and messy.  :(

I still like the series....and have a few more to show you, but I may have to throw out my bottle of iridescent paint.  You will just have to take my word for it...it's better in real life!

I like the effects of this piece.  The 6x8" panel is painted in an iridescent paint with almost a sand paper like texture.  It makes an interesting piece, but almost impossible to photograph correctly.  So I apologize for the light reflections here.

The small panel has lots of texture along with some rust.  I think it looks good either framed or unframed.  Truely, one of a kind!

I guess, it doesn't qualify as a painting, but these techniques are very creative and exciting.  I like to think that process helps my painting techniques.

I had so much fun working on this one.  I included all my favorite colors, worked hard on a center of interest, did a little stamping and scratching through for movement.  But now, I cannot decide if it is a vertical composition............

or horizontal.  So far, I have not signed it.  Which format do you prefer?

I am honored to say that one of my blogger friends, Marla Laubisch, has chosen to feature me in an interview on her blog today!  How exciting is that?  Marla and I have been communicating through comments for some time.  Marla  is a landscape painter living in North Carolina. She usually paints in oils, both in the studio and plein air. It started out with molding paste, and acrylics.  Soon I switched to oils and a palette knife.

As you can see here, I included a bit of screening.  There is also some silver foil, which is not very visible in these images, but gives off a nice reflection in the evening.

There is also plenty of texture!

When I post a painting, I feel I need to say something about it.  Today, my mind is blank.

I know I had fun with it.  I think it is interesting and has action.

And, I like the soft feeling it evokes.  That's all I have today.

Daily Abstract Painting, "Feeling My Way", 12x12"

Moving into a new area of work is always both exciting and frustrating.  When I sit down to try an abstract, I feel like I am jumping off a cliff.

On this piece I used acrylics, oils and ink.  I also included some cheesecloth for texture.

I am finding that although abstract looks very simple, and free, it requires much planning.

If you follow my blog, you probably are aware of my interest in abstract art.  Although I will continue with my impressionism paintings, I do have a growing desire to dabble in the abstract area.

This painting is a study of texture.  I wanted to keep color to a minimum.

I used molding paste, acrylics and oil pastels to achieve the desired effects.

Sometimes I get in an abstract frame of mind.  I guess this would be one of those times.   I find it relaxing and exciting at the same time to play with texture along with color.

Mountains and Poppies, acrylic, 5x7,SOLD

This is a fun little piece, one that went on my "CarolOnEdge" site at Etsy. Not quite abstract and not quite impressionistic, or I should say, MY style of impressionistic. I dug out the acrylics and did three of this type. It is the first time I have played with acrylics in many years and I hated working with them and cleaning up. But, it was great when they were all dry and ready to be varnished right away.

Still working in the abstract direction. It's kind of fun, but, I have a feeling I am going to want to try something that is a little more realistic soon. Maybe I can find a comfort zone between the two as I don't seem to know what direction I want to move in. I am having fun, experimenting and seeing where it will lead. I seem to get bored easily, so I guess this is a good thing.

While catching up on comments made while I was out of town, I discovered I have been awarded the BELLA SINCLAIR AWARD for friendship, sisterhood, caring and sharing, by Laurel Daniel

and Catherine Jeffrey. Laurel is a wonderful plein air painter from Austin who paints sunny landscapes and has the sunny disposition to match. Catherine is the pride of Canada who heads out into the rainy days of Toronto to capture the beautiful reflections of a wet urban scene. I am honored to be given this award by both of these extremely talented women, and have decided to pass it on to the following atrists who encourage and inspire me.

WILDFLOWERS, ACRYLIC, 20X24, SOLD

This is definitely not my usual painting! A few years ago, I took a month long workshop with Fritz VanEeden. Fritz is a very well known and respected artist from Holland who has been living in our town at least part of the year. I was fortunate enough to work with him for over a month, 3 days a week, for 4-5 hours. Fritz is obsessed, and if he is awake, he must have a paintbrush in his hand! He is also a wonderful man. I do enjoy this type of painting, but I just couldn't get the hang of painting out of my head. So this is my one and only true abstract!

Now, my varnishing question got several replies, both here and on facebook, and the winner is......retouch varnish! I have run to my art supply store to grab a can and now feel much more confident in my technique. So, thank you all very much for your replies!
