Daily Oil Painting, Birds, "Waverunners" 12x12" SOLD

These birds were my constant companions on early morning walks on the beaches of Sanibel.

SOLD

After 40+ years of seeing the sun rise over the Atlantic, it seemed odd to see it rise from behind the dunes at the Gulf of Mexico.

I used both brush and palette knife on this one.  I like the contrast of texture achieved in this way.

The birds ignored me and my camera, knowing they could move much faster then I can.

Daily Painting, "Atlantic Seascape", 8x10" SOLD

Who does not love the sea? The beach is a place of healing and joy. The salt cleanses us and the sun embraces us in its warmth. The ocean heals the heart, mind, and soul.

SOLD
I have two loves, the sea and the mountains.  They both have their own beauty and are ever changing.  They both bring peace to my life.

I hope you find your own little slice of heaven this weekend.

Daily Painting, "Waves", Seascape, 6x8", Oil, SOLD

I enjoy trying to capture the feel of the surf rushing to shore on my canvas.

The ocean seems to have a different character and color each time I visit.  This is the east coast of Florida, while California is much more rugged and has a deep rich blue hue.

I like to use my daily paintings very informally in my home.  Just prop them up where ever the mood strikes! No frame necessary!

THE BIG ONE, 7X5, OIL, SOLD

This little guy was staring down "the big one".  It must have looked a mile high to him.  This is kind of a companion piece to the previous post.  Thanks to Donna Vines for allowing me to paint from two of her favorite photos.

FLORIDA SURF, 8X10, OIL, SOLD

Florida is graced with the most amazing coastline and I am very happy to say that so far, the east coast has had no damage from the Gulf disaster.  We are enjoying the summer, while at the same time, it feels a little like having a time bomb ticking away.  To make matters worse, nobody knows what to expect if (when) a good ole tropical storm or hurricane comes blowing through.  So for the time being, we cross our fingers, pray a lot and wait to see what will be our future.

WAVES, 5X7, OIL,SOLD

I have not done a seascape for awhile, and I do enjoy the process, so I gave it another try. It is a push/pull thing with me. I am always torn between adding more detail, and giving just the basic information. Which do you prefer?

SURFING WEATHER, 5X7, OIL, SOLD

I lucked out and went to the beach one day,and was able to get some great surf photos. I didn't realize until later that a tropical storm was passing about 200 miles off shore, which was the reason for the larger than normal waves. The surfers were coming to the beach in droves!

ANOTHER SEASCAPE, OIL, 5X7

I really enjoy doing these small seascapes. Fortunately, with the Atlantic nearby, I have a never ending source of new compositions. This one, I call impressionistic, bordering on abstract. What fun!

It seems I cannot go too long before I get the urge to paint the ocean again. This is an early morning scene of the surf in central coastal Florida.

SUNRISE ON THE ATLANTIC, 20X24, OIL

Purchase here
595

A few weeks ago I posted a 5x7 version of this scene. It turned out very well, sold, and I was encouraged to do a larger version. This is the 20x24" version.

The beauty of the ocean is timeless and ever changing.  In this scene, I tried to re-create that wonderful moment when the sun first breaks over the horizon.  Everything is calm, the waves, the wind, the birds, and the sky bursts with pastel color.

THE GRAY SEA, 5X7 OIL, ABSTRACT, SOLD

Having become bored with flowers, I am off on a new adventure. I decided to try some really simple paintings, very few brushstrokes, minimal, maybe even abstract. Along those lines I have also gotten into a few multi media pieces. To accommodate these pieces, I have opened a new Etsy site which I call CarolOnEdge. So, here is one of my attempts to use next to nothing in the way of brushstrokes. So far, I am enjoying the challenge and the diversity.
I also have an update on the great varnish debate. This is a quote I found my the master, Richard Schmid.
Q. What are your thoughts about varnishing paintings?

A. I always apply a finish varnish to a painting when it is sufficiently dry. I allow at least three months of drying time for a work with average paint thickness, and six months for the more heavily painted. I like to use SoluvarÃ’ gloss final picture varnish diluted 1:1 with pure turpentine. SoluvarÃ’ is made by LiquitexÃ’. It is recommended by most conservators because it does not yellow with age, and it can be easily removed with turpentine if necessary. I prefer to apply it with a 2”wide bristle brush or an ordinary varnishing brush from my hardware store. Damar varnish works well too, though it will yellow slightly in time.
So, I will be going with retouch varnish for instant results and follow up with the above formula.

I really enjoy doing these small seascapes. I always seem to relax when I am working on them.
This one seems so tranquil, I think I may just go back to bed now.

THE ORANGE SKY, 5X7, OIL,SOLD

Another surf painting. I tried to trick everyone by referring to the sky in the title. I must say, I like this one, quite abstract for me.

LONGBOARD, 6x8

This is from a photo taken last summer at the beach. Is it just me, or, has this been an extremely long winter? Is it summer yet?

THE SANDPIPER, 5X7, ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING

I decided to post another of my surf paintings. This one has a little sandpiper doing what sandpipers do. It is fasinating watching them as they run back and forth between the waves and never get their feet wet!

I have several larger painting that I am working on, but, they are not ready for posting yet.

ROLLERS - 6x8 - OIL ON CANVAS PANEL - SOLD

Another of my surf paintings. It is amazing to me that I took all these photos on the same day at the same place, and the same time, and yet the paintings are coming out with totally unique hues. It could be my state of mind, or maybe the lighting ? As my husband likes to say "It is what it is."

FLORIDA SUNRISE

This past week I have been enjoying working on several small paintings of the surf. This morning, my friend Donna and I drove to the beach at 7:00 a.m. to take photos. It has been many years since I was there that early and I forgot how peaceful and wonderful it is in the early morning. Only a few people were around, just the birds and the sun and the wonderful surf rolling in. We took many, many photos and I hurried home to see how they turned out. I painted two of them this afternoon. Donna and I made a commitment to return soon for another Florida sunrise over the surf.

This is one of my paintings from today. 8x10 oil on canvas panel. It is in my Etsy store available for purchase.
